SDG Blog - 9/26/2021

So for my issue that I focused on, I focused on crunch in the video game industry. Now for those who don't know, crunch is when the developers of a video game are required to work unpaid overtime to meet deadlines. This is not limited to one studio or developer, as 40% of all video game developers have reported going through crunch at one time or another.

Now, the SDGs that I believe best goes along is #3. The #3 SDG is good health and well-being. This goes along with crunch because video game developers often experience stress and anxiety, and with working long hours, that takes a toll on their mental and physical health. SDG #3 promotes good health and well-being.

Attached to the bottom of this blog post is a video on how bad crunch is in a video game. The video outlines that a lot of AAA game studios (Naughty Dog, Rockstar, Epic Games to name a few) often subject their workers to grueling conditions with a lot of video game developers often reporting mental health issues like PTSD and anxiety.

Some websites that may help with identifying the dangers of crunch and how to stop it:

And lastly, here are some EdTech tools that will help students

Root Coding - This tool teaches kids to code, and the more students that know how to code, the more people that can choose to go into game development

Kodable - This tool teaches kids programming and logic

Code.Org - This tool teaches kids to get excited for coding and programming
